Jakarta – PT Arsari Tambang stated that its smelter facility is now fully supplied with electricity generated from renewable energy sources. The statement was conveyed by the President Director of PT Arsari Tambang, Aryo Djojohadikusumo, as part of the company’s commitment to sustainability and its long-term net-zero emissions target.
Aryo explained that the transition became possible following the interconnection of Bangka Island with the Sumatra power grid. Electricity used at the smelter is currently sourced from the Sarula geothermal power plant, as well as hydropower plants located in Aceh and North Sumatra. “I am pleased to share that the Arsari Tambang smelter is now supplied with electricity from renewable energy plants in Sumatra,” Aryo said on Wednesday (12/9/2025).
While the smelter has achieved 100 percent renewable electricity usage, Aryo acknowledged that mining operations, particularly the use of heavy equipment, still rely on diesel fuel. He noted, however, that the company’s overall progress toward net-zero emissions has reached approximately 60 to 70 percent, with full implementation targeted within the next five to ten years.
Aryo emphasized that this initiative is also aligned with increasing global market expectations for sustainability. He noted that more than 50 percent of global tin consumption is currently linked to the semiconductor and electronics industries, which place strong emphasis on environmental performance throughout their supply chains. “As mining companies, we must adapt to market expectations. The customer is king,” he said.
In addition to emissions reduction efforts, PT Arsari Tambang has recorded achievements in environmental rehabilitation. In 2024, the company reported a 91 percent success rate in rehabilitating the Krakas watershed area in Central Bangka. Tree species planted under the program included cashew, coastal pine, and eucalyptus. According to Aryo, the use of productive plant species is intended not only to restore the environment but also to provide economic benefits for local communities.
The company has also initiated marine ecosystem restoration programs, particularly coral reef rehabilitation in the Belinyu area of Bangka Island. Aryo stated that this effort forms part of the company’s offshore mining reclamation activities, making Arsari Tambang the first tin company in Indonesia to actively undertake marine ecosystem restoration as part of its reclamation program.
From a business perspective, the company is targeting annual production of 2,000 tons, with projected revenue of at least IDR 1 trillion. While exports—particularly to China—remain a key market, Aryo noted that domestic demand has shown significant growth.
Aryo also expressed appreciation for the support of local governments and the Batam Indonesia Free Zone Authority in facilitating the development of special economic zones and free trade areas where Arsari Tambang is developing its downstream tin processing facility, specifically for solder production.
He reaffirmed that while the company cooperates with foreign partners, majority ownership remains with Indonesian shareholders. “Foreign partners hold minority stakes, while majority ownership remains in the hands of Indonesia’s best talents,” Aryo concluded.
