As Part of Its Sustainability Commitment, Arsari Tambang Smelter Uses 100% Renewable Electricity

JAKARTA – PT Arsari Tambang stated that its smelter facility is now fully powered by electricity generated from renewable energy sources. The statement was delivered by the President Director of PT Arsari Tambang, Aryo Djojohadikusumo, as part of the company’s commitment to sustainability and its net-zero emissions target.

According to Aryo, the transition became possible after Bangka Island was connected to the Sumatra power grid. Electricity used at the smelter is now supplied by the Sarula geothermal power plant, as well as hydropower plants located in Aceh and North Sumatra. “I am proud to announce that the Arsari Tambang smelter is now supplied with electricity from renewable energy plants in Sumatra,” Aryo said on Wednesday (13/8/2025).

Although the use of renewable electricity has reached 100 percent at the refining facility, Aryo acknowledged that the operation of heavy equipment in mining activities still relies on diesel fuel. However, he noted that overall progress toward net-zero emissions currently stands at approximately 60 to 70 percent, with full achievement targeted within the next five to ten years.

Aryo emphasized that this initiative also represents a response to increasing global market demands for sustainability. He noted that more than 50 percent of global tin consumption is currently linked to the semiconductor and electronics industries, which place strong emphasis on environmental considerations within their supply chains. “As miners, we must respond to market demand. The customer is king,” he said. In addition to emissions reduction efforts, PT Arsari Tambang has also recorded achievements in environmental rehabilitation programs. In 2024, the company reported a 91 percent success rate in rehabilitating the Krakas watershed area in Central Bangka.

Plant species used in the program included cashew trees, coastal pine, and eucalyptus. According to Aryo, the planting of productive tree species is intended not only to restore environmental conditions but also to provide economic benefits for local communities.

The company has also initiated marine ecosystem restoration programs, particularly coral reef rehabilitation in the Belinyu area of Bangka Island. Aryo stated that this effort forms part of the company’s offshore mining reclamation activities, making Arsari Tambang the first tin company in Indonesia to actively undertake marine ecosystem restoration as part of its reclamation program.

From a business perspective, the company is targeting annual production of 2,000 tons, with projected revenue of at least IDR 1 trillion. While exports—particularly to China—remain a key market, Aryo noted that domestic demand has shown significant growth.

Aryo reaffirmed that while the company collaborates with foreign partners, majority ownership remains in Indonesian hands. “Foreign partners hold only minority stakes. Majority ownership remains with the best sons and daughters of Indonesia,” he said.
