Arsari Tambang Spurs Clean Energy Transition, ESG Commitment is a Priority

JAKARTA – PT Arsari Tambang continues to strengthen its commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles through concrete steps towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable mining operations.

Arsari Group CEO, Aryo PS Djojohadikusumo, emphasized that the company has reached an important milestone in energy transition, especially in the utilization of renewable energy in its production line.

“If we talk about net zero, of course we have to talk about the use of fossil fuels. I am proud to say that Arsari Tambang’s smelter is now supplied 100 percent by electricity from renewable energy plants on the island of Sumatra, such as geothermal from Sarula and hydro plants in Aceh and North Sumatra,” Aryo said at the Indonesia Critical Minerals Conference & Expo in Jakarta, Wednesday 4th June.

He added that although the use of renewable energy has been fully achieved at smelter facilities, challenges still remain – especially in the conversion of heavy equipment that still relies on diesel fuel.

However, Aryo is optimistic that the overall net zero target can be achieved in the next 5 to 10 years. Currently, he estimates that the company’s progress towards the target has reached 60-70 percent.

“If you say 100 percent, are we satisfied? No, we are not. We cannot be satisfied,” he said.

Not only focusing on reducing carbon emissions, Arsari Tambang also made historic achievements in rehabilitation efforts. The watershed rehabilitation project in Krakas, Central Bangka, recorded the highest success rate in the history of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, with tree survival rates reaching 91 percent.

“We don’t just plant ordinary trees. We choose productive trees such as cashew, shrimp cypress, and eucalyptus so that they can provide direct economic benefits to the surrounding community,” Aryo explained.

More than that, Arsari Tambang is a pioneer in marine ecosystem restoration efforts. The company is listed as the first tin producer in Indonesia to actively plant coral reefs as part of marine mine reclamation, especially in the Belinyu area, Bangka Induk.

In the market and industrial sectors, the company has also shown positive developments. With a soldering tin production capacity of up to 2,000 tons per year, Arsari Tambang targets a minimum turnover of Rp1 trillion. In addition to meeting export demand to China, the domestic market has also shown significant growth – especially from electronics companies in Batam, such as Schneider Electric and Bolex.

“What makes us proud is that the domestic market potential is also huge. In fact, the Apple factory is completing their facility next to our factory in Batam. This further strengthens the national industrial ecosystem,” said Aryo.

Aryo also emphasized that majority control of the company remains in the hands of the nation’s children. “I want to emphasize that our partners from China and other countries are only minority shareholders. Majority ownership is still held by Indonesia’s best sons and daughters,” he concluded.

Arsari Tambang’s progressive steps mark a new chapter in the national mining industry – one that no longer solely pursues profit, but also places sustainability and social responsibility as top priorities.
